Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches are more than just pain, they can be debilitating, unpredictable, and deeply disruptive to daily life. Many patients live with chronic migraines, tension-type headaches, or cervicogenic headaches that stem from neck and shoulder tension, past injuries, or unresolved trauma to the nervous system. At Atma Health & Acupuncture, migraine care is not an afterthought—it is a clinical focus grounded in both experience and precision.

Our approach recognizes that many migraines are driven by a combination of musculoskeletal tension, nervous system dysregulation, inflammation, and impaired circulation - especially in patients with a history of whiplash injuries, sports-related trauma, repetitive strain, or chronic stress. Acupuncture works by calming the nervous system, reducing muscle guarding, improving blood flow to the head and neck, and interrupting pain cycles before they become entrenched.

This is a core area of specialty for Jason Calva, PhD, LAc, who has lived with migraines for most of his life. Through his own experience, Jason understands firsthand how frustrating it can be to rely on medications alone, especially when they offer incomplete relief or significant side effects. Acupuncture was the modality that made the most meaningful and lasting difference in his own quality of life, and that experience deeply informs how he treats patients today.

Jason specializes in treating cervicogenic migraines and complex headache patterns using a combined approach of acupuncture, tuina (therapeutic medical massage), and cupping therapy. For many patients—especially those whose migraines originate in the neck, shoulders, or upper back—this integrative approach addresses the root mechanical and neurological drivers of pain more effectively than standard care alone.

Patients often report fewer migraine days, reduced intensity, improved neck mobility, better sleep, and a greater sense of control over their symptoms. Care is individualized and may be used alongside medications, physical therapy, or neurological care. When appropriate, we are happy to collaborate with primary care providers, neurologists, or rehabilitation specialists.

Migraines do not define who you are, but untreated, they can quietly shape your life. Our goal is to help reduce their hold on your nervous system and restore a sense of steadiness, clarity, and confidence in your body again.
